Is it computer assistance?

Just after 6th round U1800 Pomaranch team was a leader of division and had a place in final. But teamchess stuff accused 1st board cerebero in using computer assistance. And overturned all his games.

They said "In Cerebero’s 6 games that we looked at, he had zero blunders.
He played 87 % number 1 move each time. I can even give you the
engine and version that was being used but I would rather not."

I cant believe it. There are no motivation to be winner by cheating. And looking through games I cant find something suspicious. But perheps I am not right.

Is someone reading that blog can judge if game is played with help of engine?

There are 9 games which Cerebero played in 45 45 tourney.
Guess in which 6 games he used computer assistance?

The funny thing is he didn't win all his games. If he were cheating wouldn't he have won? And against lower rated players too.

I don't believe that there was computer assistance in any of these games. There were six games without real blunders, but in three of them his opponents avoided them as well (one draw and two unnecessarily resigned). In many games there were typical moves that cerebero plays (weakens castled kings pawn structure needlessly, exchanging pawns). Class B-A players can have good streaks, excellent tournaments and play every now and then games where Fritz finds hardly no improvements. In all of these games there were moments that computer would have handled differently but of course the argument is that he has used computer only on background, avoiding blunders and spotting tactics.

A sad business, if they rule that cerebero has used a computer he’s not allowed to play on TeamChess tournaments in the future. I hope TDs would still reconsider their judgement, but as Jens said it is very unlikely.

1. Atreus - cerebero

Unlikely computer assistance

Computer would have definitely taken the pawn (15..Qxb7). Cerebero missed some stronger moves (34..Qh5!) but played very caferully. A good game and both players played very well, I didn’t see neither player commit a serious blunder.

2. cerebero - gonzolawyer

Definitely no computer assistance :)

3. cerebero - watson

Unlikely computer assistance

Very human play; simplifying when winning instead of looking for mate and missing few tactically even stronger moves.

4. ramboviz - cerebero

No computer assistance

Human like moves:

a) Exchanging pawns when computer likes creating more pressure i.e. Cerebero played 21..fxg4 instead of 21..c6

b) Protecting pawn (23..b5) when computer sees it is protected tactically (23..Nd3! 24.Rxc4 b5! forking rook and queen)

Great game and excellent finish with 25..f5!

5. cerebero - Atreaus

Unlikely computer assistance

a) 11.f4 is a move an amateur would most likely play (11.Qb3 threats to grab the rook and 11.Bf4 develops bishop and protects knight).

b) 16.dxc6 again decreases tension, computer likes 16.f5! and normal 16.Be3 would be clearly better (developing the bishop and allows king finally to castle).

Another wild game and advantage swings from side to side. Atreaus made the last blunder and lost.

6. gonzolawyer - cerebero

No computer assistance

18..Bxd8 is clearly human move, computer sees that pawn b6 is tactically protected and 18..Rexd8! is much stronger.

White resigned needlessly, 29..Rc1 is a good move but 30.Bg2 would still keep the material equal.

7. adingod - cerebero

Unlikely computer assistance

Very good game and again white resigned for imaginary threat. Final move 27..R8a4 is also quite humanlike (threats the queen and there seems to be no escape without losing material) and there were two other moves that were equally strong. However, with 27..R8a4 there was one saving move and adingod missed it (28.Rxa2! and white has two rooks for a queen).

No real blunders on either side, adingod could have continued the game.

8. ButiOxa - cerebero

Unlikely computer assistance

Another short game where cerebero played very well. 13..f4! was excellent move (13..f4 14.gxf4), shattering pawns that protect enemy king but 14..Bxf4 seems to be slightly stronger than 14..Rxf4 (avoiding trades).

21..Bxh3! is nice fake sacrifice winning a pawn and his opponent resigned without reason (only move would have been 22.Nxd4 and black is a pawn up, has two passed pawns and a great position but white could still fight for draw). I don't think cerebero saw further than just gaining a pawn, in fact the sacrifice was very strong and if white accepts it he's going to lose a lot of material.

No real blunders on either side, ButiOxa could have continued the game.

9. cerebero - CamyC

Unlikely computer assistance

Very careful game and 24.f5! is a excellent move. I don't think it is too hard to see (what else white could do?), the knight fork on c6 seems quite obvious threat.

Nice finish and I liked 32.Bd4! a lot. Again I don't think that was too hard to see though, the threats were very basic motifs (royal fork, basic Q+N mate, decoying the defending pieces).

Thank you, bahus

I had a look through games with the same result:

1) cant be computer assistance;
2) unlikely computer assistance, all good moves have very basic motives;
3) one game may be computer assistance, ramboviz - cerebero. There are really may be 87% of
first moves of some strange engine. But I cant believe he used computer against lower-rated
player who had not castled.

Since there are many engines so I can agree that if there are no blunders a move in 90% can be
a 1st move of engine in game that has many forced moves. The problem for me is one. How can it
be that ALL 6 games have so much forced moves that it is like engine.

And Jens is right. There are no way for defence. If we will put games under engine that gives
87% of 1st moves like in games it will give the same again and again. No matter how basic
motives of those moves are, no matter how many of them are forced, result is the same.

Another interesting idea from cerebero's games: never resign in teamchess games.

RomaLavrn, do you have an update on this post as far as the final resolution of this and how Cerebero is doing?
